How to choose hose fittings that fit
Thread standard comes first
Almost every outdoor tap and garden hose in the US uses GHT — Garden Hose Thread, 3/4 inch, 11.5 threads per inch. It is not the same as NPT pipe thread, and forcing one onto the other is the most common cause of a fitting that leaks no matter how tight you crank it. Everything in this collection is 3/4" GHT unless the listing says otherwise.
Brass or plastic
Solid brass costs more up front and outlasts plated or plastic hardware by years, particularly on anything with moving parts. Weight is a reasonable proxy for copper content: our shut-off valve weighs 7 oz where a typical alternative weighs 5.6 oz, and the difference shows up as thread wear after a season or two.
Quick connects vs threaded
Threaded couplings are cheaper and have nothing to fail. Quick connects cost a little more but make swapping between a nozzle, a sprinkler and a bare hose a two-second job — which in practice means you'll actually check and clean your washers.
Splitters
A cheap plastic splitter has narrow internal passages that throttle flow noticeably. Brass splitters with full-bore valves restrict far less and let you shut off unused lines properly. Choose two-way for a hose plus a sprinkler, four-way if you're running drip lines alongside a hose.
Frequently asked questions
My connection leaks. What's wrong?
Nine times out of ten it's the rubber washer inside the female coupling — flattened, cracked or missing. Washers cost pennies; replace them on sight rather than trying to judge whether they're still good. Overtightening a fitting onto a bad washer will not help.
Why is my water pressure so weak?
Usually a restriction rather than a supply problem. Check for kinks, then pull the mesh screen out of the hose coupling — sediment and mineral scale collect there until barely anything gets through. Soak it in white vinegar if it's crusted.
Do I need thread seal tape?
Not on GHT hose connections — those seal on a rubber washer, and tape on the threads does nothing. Tape belongs on tapered pipe threads, such as the NPT fittings on pressure washer hardware.
Will these survive a freeze?
Brass handles cold well, but water trapped inside any fitting will expand and split it. Disconnect, drain and store fittings indoors before the first hard freeze.
