How to choose the right string lights
Plug-in or battery?
Plug-in sets run indefinitely and can usually be joined end to end, which makes them the better choice for anything permanent — a pergola, a window, a full wall. Battery sets go anywhere there's no outlet and are far easier to hang temporarily, but a set of AA cells typically gives you a few weeks of evening use before it needs replacing. If the spot has power within about 16 feet, choose plug-in.
How much length you actually need
Measure the run and add roughly 30% for drape and slack — lights that pull taut look severe and stress the wire. For a curtain effect behind a window or backdrop, work to the finished panel size rather than the wall: our 300 LED curtain covers about 6.6ft by 9.8ft, the 600 LED about 15.7ft by 9.8ft.
Indoor or outdoor rating
Anything living outside needs an IP44 rating or better. Note that IP44 covers rain and splashing, not submersion — keep the transformer under cover or inside a weatherproof outlet box, and tuck end-to-end joins under an eave.
Warm white or coloured
Warm white reads as cosy and carries through every season, which is why it's the safest single purchase. Coloured strands (purple, blue) are worth adding for Halloween and themed events rather than as your only set.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect several sets together?
Yes, on plug-in sets with a male and female end plug. Check the stated maximum — our star string lights allow up to 10 chains, and the curtain lights up to 5 additional units. Exceeding it gives you a dim, unstable run at the far end.
Are these safe to leave on overnight?
LED string lights draw very little power and run cool, so they're safe for extended use. Use the built-in timer where the set has one, and keep the transformer clear of fabric.
My strand is half dark. Is it broken?
Usually not. Loose bulbs and a blown fuse in the plug account for most half-lit strands — see our troubleshooting guide below before replacing anything.
Do the curtain lights include a curtain?
No. These sets are the light strings only, designed to hang behind or in front of your own curtains.
